Celebrate summer with plein-air painting and sketching

Hello Art Friends,
Summer is here! Let's celebrate with some plein-air painting and sketching. We will be having paint-outs on Tuesday mornings starting 5/27 at 9 am (we know that is tomorrow and sorry for the short notice) behind the Eye Clinic, 800 N 1st St. Park on the lower back side of the clinic near the river walk. Not sure about painting, then bring your sketchbook and drawing tools. It's all for fun and a great opportunity to get out, work from life, and meet other artists.

A schedule for June will be coming out later this week. Besides Tuesdays, it will also include several Saturday dates. In the meantime, if you know of some painting locations, leave a comment below and we will get them on the list. Please feel free to share this info with others you think may be interested. Thanks everyone!

Classes and Workshops at Muse Arts and Crafts School in Manitowish Waters

A Day With A Birch-bark Canoe Maker
June 28
Spend the day with a canoe maker and experience the intrigue of preparing to make a birch bark canoe. Birch bark canoe materials can be sustainably harvested from the forest and this class will take you into the woods to find birch bark, cedar, and the roots needed to make your own canoe. For anyone considering making a birch bark canoe, this class is an excellent introduction to the trade. Taught by the nationally acclaimed master canoe maker Ferdy Goode.

Photography- High Dynamic Range Imaging
June 6
We start with basic photography overview and talk about different types of cameras and how to make full use of their capabilities. The second half of this class will focus on High Dynamic Range Imaging (HDRI or HDR) which is a set of methods used in photography to allow a greater dynamic range  between the lightest and darkest areas of an image than current standard digital imaging methods or photographic methods. In simpler terms, HDR compensates for the loss of detail by taking multiple pictures at different exposure levels and intelligently stitching them together to produce a picture that is representative in both dark and bright areas.

Photography- Photoshop Elements
June 7
Adobe Photoshop Elements is the consumer-based version of the popular Photoshop program that allows you to store, sort, and edit images and photographs. Photography enthusiasts will love Elements ability to organize images and create albums. Photoshop lovers will love the wide range of features that allow you to edit and manipulate images just as you would in Photoshop.

Since Elements was designed with the consumer in mind, editing and manipulating photos with Elements is much easier than with Photoshop. Users get three editing modes to choose from based on their ability and the task they wish to complete. Where the Quick editing mode is more for beginners, the Guided and Expert editing modes give you the power of Photoshop behind you so that you can edit and manipulate images like a pro.

Elements is ideal for any budding photography enthusiast, home user with photos they want to organize or edit, or for anyone wishing to do basic photo manipulation or graphic arts.
In this course, you'll learn your way around the latest version of Photoshop Elements to make navigating it a breeze. You'll also learn all the features and how to utilize the options so that editing, organizing, and sharing your photos is quick and fun.

You could call me a “Foodie” long before the current term became popular. Blessed with great cooks for parents and an appetite for pure and natural flavors from scratch, food and cooking has been my passion for over 40 years. As a previous cooking instructor through Nicolet College, I enjoyed sharing my knowledge and passion with a variety of students of all ages and experiences, from beginner to advanced. “The Artists Muse: Wisconsin Artists-Wisconsin Poets”
exhibition for 2015 for the Howard Young Art Gallery

Dear Artists,
I am putting together another “The Artists Muse: Wisconsin Artists-Wisconsin Poets” exhibition for 2015 for the Howard Young Art Gallery. This year’s artists muse exhibition was extremely successful with a full house for the reception in late April.  It took a whole year to plan for this exhibition – and gather artists and poets so now is the time to start for 2015.
I would like to invite you submit jpgs of your artwork;  or a link to your website,  for consideration in this exhibition.  If you have already sent me your submission and interest in participating then you do not need to reply to this email. If your work is included in this exhibition, this is what you would be required to do: create 1-5 artworks; this number depends on how many artists accept this invitation, to relate to poem written by a Wisconsin Poet.  I have a treasure trove of poems by Wisconsin poets from this year, you can choose from this list – or perhaps you know a Wisconsin poet that you would like to work with.

If you are invited to participate in this exhibition you will be required to create 1-3 works of art that are linked to Wisconsin poetry.  One of your works will need to be finished, photographed or scanned (if you do not know how to do this I can help you) and the photographs or scans, and poem(s) need to be at my studio by December 1, 2014. I will be creating a book to be sending with my proposal that I will be submitting in January to various galleries around the state.

This project is not just for The Howard Young Art Gallery - I will be sending a proposal out to various galleries around the state in hopes that they too will want to have this exhibition in their gallery. That means that your work will be shown in other areas in the state.  If the project travels then we can carpool our efforts to get our works to a different gallery - but that is down the road a ways and can be discussed at a later date.
In addition the poets whose works we use will be part of the opening reception for the exhibition - they will be invited to read their poetry at the reception at Howard Young Art Gallery and perhaps in the traveling exhibition.

In the event of this exhibition going on the road and you have sold the work you have created for the initial proposal you will be asked to create another(s) to go on the road with the traveling exhibition.

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to email me.  Email is the best because I really hate the phone.  Please let me know if you are interested or not within a by June 1, 2015.
My email address is:  christinealfery@christinealfery.com

Sincerely,
Christine Alfery

Walls of Wittenberg's (WOW) Fall Show

Hi Folks,

Please pass the information along to one and all. Our jurors this year will be Ron Zdroik and Julia Collins, both winners of Best of Show in earlier shows!  Read more about them on the web site.

Two years ago we had a nice assortment of artists who had exhibited in the WOWSPACE send me photos of one of the works and a brief bio which we put up on the Smart Wisconsin Miles of Art site. Let's exceed that number this year. It is good advertising for you. Thanks in advance for getting something off to me.

Looking forward to seeing many interesting pieces for this show--don't be put off by the theme--abstract art will be as welcomed as representational work.
