Pick Up /Drop off change!!

Sorry for the last minute change, but since the weather is already bad in Wausau, and we are getting calls from members in outlying areas, we will hang the Mind Over Matter 2 show on Tuesday Dec 15th.

Please call Christine or myself if that does not work for you and we will make other arrangements. If you have already dropped off your art, we will attend to it possibly this Thursday. Just let us know where you hung it.

None of us should put ourselves in harm's way to get this show hung.

Take care all ....

Betsy Popp on The Site!!

Betsy works and instructs in a variety of mediums including oils, acrylics, watercolor, wood sculpture, and pastels. I like the diversity a variety of mediums has to offer,... believe me I never get bored. I find nature to be my inspiration when it comes to subject matter.

It's UP! It's Good!!

The Web site is up The Web Site is UP!!
The internet face of the Guild is operational once again.
This is intended to be the public face of the Guild and a place for people that know nothing about us to look us up online and see who where and what we are.
The blog will continue to be the members link to the guild on a day to day basis and the place to get info on forms, dates to pick up are, drop off art, communicate with each other, comment, see who is up to what, etc.
But web browsers will now have a place to go to see us.
I would encourage all members who haven't yet to get me some info on themselves and their art so I can include them on the "Members" page. It looks great with the stuff we have on it now but it would be nice to have all of us on it so people can see how good we are.
CLICK HERE to see it. Browse around.

Lighter Than Air Winners

I updated the winners for the Lighter Than Air show going on now at the Clinic. It's on the right and down a little
Congrats to the winners!!

Collaboration

Web Site

I have the new site very close to being done. I actually had it online just for a few days as a test and it went very well. I am going to be talking to Sharon on Thursday to get some needed info and after that it should be up and running.
This blog will continue to operate after the site is up to date. This blog is alot easier to update when things change and I can do it from my iPhone when the time comes. This will always be the more day to day routine place to get updates and get forms etc. The web site is more our "Public Face" to web surfers and potential new members and art shoppers.

I'll keep you updated.

Updated Dates

I just did a major update of the dates to remember section on the right and down a bit. It has been a bust exhibit season and some of the listings were over and done. Now they are truly upcoming exhibits only.

News from Betsy Popp!

Currently I am on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. I was asked to come back (I was there Artist in Residence in June of 08) to restore an historical sign within the park.
Most all of the signs have been replaced with smaller, photo images of whatever the sign is describing. This particular sign is the oldest of its kind left in the park. It is a 2 sided 4' x 8' sign that was hand painted and lettered back possibly in the late 60's maybe early 70's - the dates are not for sure as they are still tryiing to find out more information on the sign. I have taken a inventory of the supplies needed to restore the sign and as of yet are still waiting for said supplies. In the mean time I am taking advantage of the beautiful scenery and hiking possibilities that this area has to offer. This past Tuesday I hiked from the North Rim to the South Rim - about 23.5 miles and an elevation change of 8250 to 2400 at the Colorado River and then back up to 6860 feet. Got some great images to work from.

Showing Art

I have been really dissappointed lately finding out about opportunities to exhibit work right after the show starts. I looked around for the best place to get info regarding places to get applications before the deadline for art submissions. Today I found a couple good ones. Check out the Arts Board directory. They have a list of displays in Wisconsin. Not the definitive end all of places to show art but its got some good info.
Also get a listing on the State Run "PORTALWISCONSIN Site. Just a good free place to list yourself and get some more of your stuff online.
I have also included the Wisconsin Arts Board link at their logo on the right so you don't have to find this post if you want to check back with them.
Anyone else know of a good source for our members to get info on upcoming shows before the entry deadline?

New Web SIte Members Page Info Needed!!

We are rebuilding the WVAG web site from scratch and would like to include a page about our members. Who we are and what we do etc.
We need a brief paragraph from everyone who wants to participate about who they are, what type of art they do, and a small picture of a representative work. If you don't have an electronic file just mail a picture to Rick Eyre and I will scan it for you to get it included.
Mine will look like this.........

RICK EYRE.
Landscape and scenic photography from around Wisconsin and around the globe, featuring diverse images of everything from people to Eagles to Mountains to Lighthouses. www.RickEyrePhoto.com 715-842-5892

What could be easier? And then to the right of that there is space for a representative image that I have not decided on yet. I urge you to be a part of the new site and we can get more recognition in the art world and grow and gain the recognition we deserve as a Guild.

To be included in this E-Mail me at Mail4Rick@mac.com with your info and an image. This site will be as good as we make it!

Thanks

Rick

May 21st Meeting Minutes

                                                WISCONSIN VISUAL ARTIST’S GUILD

                                              May 21, 2009  Conference Room

                                                       Marshfield Clinic, Weston

Attendance:  Jean Huntoon,  Sandy Krumpas, Pat Plunket, Bonnie Kostrzak, Sharon Dowis, Christine Kysely, Chandra Witter, Mary Murphy, Laura Nelke.  Thank you for participating in our monthly meetings!!

Hi! to all the members of WVAG!  We miss seeing you at the meetings!  I know full well how busy we all are, but getting together as a group and sharing experiences, both good and bad, makes us feel better and encourages us to get out of our comfort zone, make some art, share ideas, expand on ideas, congratulate other’s successes, receive respect and admiration from our peers and just enjoy each other’s company.  Maybe this is just rambling, but this is what this group does for me.  Hope to see you soon! (Really!)

Another piece sold from the show while we were having our May meeting.  Congratulations  Carol Hettinga!

News from our members:

Pat Plunket:  Brought in the latest example of the “PEACE” sculpture.  The globe and landmass are to be built at NTC by the students.  Everything for the entire piece will be made and finished within 15 miles of Wausau.  Then, the same thing will be created in Cairo, Egypt.  Awesome!  The actual sculpture to be 10 feet high.  We discussed the possibility of running all the individual words for peace in different languages along the bottom of the base rather than added here and there.   Pat needs $20,000.00 to start the actual piece so we discussed how and who he could contact to (easily, I think) raise the necessary funds.  We also discussed the value the community would receive by documenting this incredible journey!  This is HUGE, Pat – congratulations!  Future art show at NTC a bust.  Thanks for trying, Pat!

Christine Kysely:  Christine’s idea for a welding club also shot down at the NTC. Their loss!!  Hasn’t created any artwork, but is going at it hard at school.  She has all of the new entry forms for the upcoming shows finished.  Watch your mail!  Rhythm and Blues moved up to June by the CVA (Yikes!) so get crankin’ on those entries!  “Mind Over Matter…The Artist Revealed “ show taking the place of “Colorama” and “Peace on Earth”.  We will have fewer shows this year.  Christine has 60 pots planted and has little tomatoes already!  She shared her problems with birds and then everyone had a story.  Who knew the little buggers could and do make so many problems!  Many thanks to you, Christine, for all the work you put into us, I mean the guild!

Chandra Witter:  I have had a very difficult time of things, both at work and at home, but have been able to make some glass in preparation of things to come.  I had the wonderful experience of being the first guinea pig, I mean the first test case, for the video interview combining the current show with an artist reflection.  Rick Eyer visited me at my home studio and did a fabulous job of making me feel comfortable and interviewing me.  He had prepared an excellent list of questions.  I had such a good time!  We watched Rick’s magic unfold when we watched the video.  Great camera work, Rick!

Sandy Krumpass:  Her husband has been permanently laid off.   Sorry to hear this, Sandy!  She said she is trying to do some painting and finds it make life a little better.  We talked about how we, as artistic human beings, need to feed that inner beast that is desire.  Good luck, Sandy and keep on painting!

Bonnie Kostrzak:  Got into “Creeper Car Show” with 3 pieces!  Awesome!  She has been super busy “chasing her own tail”.  The Green Bay gallery, “Art Garage”, called Bonnie because they saw her website and loved her work!  Congratulations!  This is what we are all waiting for!!!!!  She has to hang her own work but has an opportunity to hang all of her work in the front as her own show when she is ready. Wow!  Talked about portalwisconsin.org. where they support artists and list websites for free.  Got into New Visions “Art in Agriculture”!

Laura Nelke.  Got into New Visions “Art in Agriculture”.  Brought photo of work and progressive photos.  Answered a lot of questions regarding technique for those of us that are severely painting challenged.  Said this was the fastest painting she’s done and she feels this piece just came together and feels so very, very good about it.  This is a great feeling! Brought catalog for the Art expo in Chicago.  Laura’s signed up and ready for some classes.  Looking forward to dabbling in new ideas and trying something new.  Thanks for sharing, Laura!

Mary Murphy:  continues to teach silk fusion classes this year.  Did the  “Art Walk” from a pet storefront in Stevens Point.   Had the best display!  She had some great feedback!  Like many others she has not having enough time for getting contacts and expanding her opportunities.  Best wishes, Mary!

Jean Huntoon:  Got into “Art in Agriculture”, too!  She also brought a photo of the work accepted.  What a nice piece.  She and Laura shared the fact that this was a frequently photographed and painted barn.  Jean said she has painted many aspects of this barn and Laura mentioned that she had explored many of the dark recesses of this barn.. I found this very a very interesting thought.  Thanks for this insight, Jean.   Jean’s husband has recovered from colon cancer.  That’s awesome!

Sharon Dowis:  Had two pieces accepted into New Vision “Art in Agriculture”. WOW! Has piece in S. Carolina and received an Honorable Mention!  Has a piece in New Hampshire. If she gets a piece in  Connecticut it will be her 8th state.  She has been so busy moving  her mom from Milwaukee.   Been working hard but doesn’t  have  anything in the garden, yet.  (This could be bad!)

Good Luck to everyone getting your art together for “Rhythm and Blues” and “Lighter than Air”!

Respectfully submitted by ChandraLyn,  297-0858

Subscribe via E-Mail

Great new option to keep updated on WVAG news and happenings!

You never have to remember to sign in and check out what is u with the group or see when the next meeting is or whatever!.

And its EASY to do too!!
But don't try clicking on the pictures in this post.  They are really just pictures.  You have to do all of this on the actual right side of the blog.

All you have to do is scroll down a little to where the green on the right turns into blue, click on  "Subscribe in a reader" and right under where it says "choose your reader" there is a spot to click on "Get Wisconsin Visual Artists Guild delivered via E-Mail".

and right under where it says "choose your reader" there is a spot with  blue lettering and little envelope graphic that says to click to "Get Wisconsin Visual Artists Guild delivered via E-Mail"

Just click on that and fill in your e-mail address and you're done.  Viola!! You're a web master!!  My Grandmothers name was Viola.  Seriously!!

You have to fill in the little letters that they give you too.  Thats so the "Blogger" people don't get spammed and neither do you.  This on is  "bionsub" but remember these are just examples I am sending along to show how this looks when you do it.  You will have different ones when you really do it.

Then Click "Complete Submission request" and that's it!!

From now on any time a post gets made and it shows up like the Guild sent you an e-mail!  Just like that!!
Give it a try!!!

March Meeting

We will have a meeting on Thursday, March 19th at  6pm.

Please arrive early since the clinic doors are now locked at 6pm.

Winners of The Cattails & Flowers Exhibit will be announced and awards presented.

Extra effort is put forth by the judge and volunteers to obtain feedback about our work.  Most shows give no feedback to the artists; even if juried into a show or if winning an award.  If you value this information, and would like the "Judge's Notes" for your entries, you can pick them up at the meeting or have someone get them for you.

Hope to see you there!

Sharon

Topic for discussion........

Here is a good one for us to weigh in on..................

I have arguments for both sides of this so there is no right or wrong I am just interested on how my fellow members would handle this situation.
Lets says one of us has a show at the New Visions gallery in Marshfield (at the hospital).  The lets says one of the employees at the hospital calls and says he wants to use 3 of the images from the show in the calendar they publish. 70,000 calendars.  Thats alot of calendars.  So the thing is they want to use the pictures for a grand total of nothing.  Just "exposure".  70,000 exposures.
times 3 pictures.
So the original thought was "Sure, people will look at those pictures and get to my web site and then look around and either buy one of the images from the show or another one from the site"  But then it turns out they will not ever ever ever print that artists web site on the page.  Only name, title of the image, and artists city.  No web sites!
So that person thinks "where is the Exposure in that?"
To license the images for those calendars would cost someone $2366 using industry standard pricing and he should just GIVE it to them for free?  Is the printer printing them for free? Is he assembling these calendars for free?  Would one of their fellow members at the WVAG GIVE them 3 pieces to use without even allowing a link or some sort of way for a viewer to look further or a way to actually BUY something/  OK its me.  Lets get that out.  Its me. I explained that I am traveling the earth getting these images and I am the ne climbing the Rockies in my rental car in the winter and they not only want to use the images for free they won't even print my web site address on the page?
On the other hand it's 70,000 copies of my pictures out there hanging all over the place?

What say you, dear members?  Yay or nay?
Move your mouse down about 1/2 an inch and click on comments and let us know what you think!
Thanks

February Meeting info from Sharon

Hello all!

Will there be a meeting on Thursday February 19th????  We'd like to have at least 10 members at a meeting and that does not always happen.  Please reply to this email with "YES" or "NO."  Some members travel a long way and we want to make it worth their while to attend.  Once I have 10 "YES" responses I will send out another saying the meeting is on.

Other news .....  You may have noticed that we are producing color cards announcing our shows.  These cards are placed at the CVA, Riverfront, the Library and Leigh Yawkey.  The card for "Cattails & Flowers"  will include each participating artist's last name on the front.  (Riverfront does this for their Visions exhibit.)

Reminder ... "Cattails & Flowers" entries are due to be postmarked by Feb 19th.

Have a great day......

Sharon

PS ...... Christine now has email. You can contact her with ????s if you wish. cakysely1@ntc.edu

Membership Renewal Reminder

There is still time to get your membership dues, renewal and release forms mailed in.  Packets with these and entry forms were mailed out this fall.  If you need to replace these forms they are available on the Guild's Blog Site @   http://wvag.blogspot.com/

BOTH release forms must be signed and sent in with your renewal form and fee.

"Mind Over Matter" has not yet been judged.  Some pieces were chosen as possible 2010 calendar entries and were removed to be photographed by the clinic.  Now that they have been returned, judging will take place soon.  An email will be sent out with the results as soon as they are known.

Stay warm!

Sharon
